District competition began last week, and Bastrop’s girls and boys soccer teams didn’t have the start they were aiming for.
Between the two teams, Bears soccer went 0-3-1 last week, facing off against the Pflugerville Panthers and Hendrickson Hawks. Despite the results, both teams, especially the boys, showed in pre-district play that they have the talent to compete with anyone.
The boys team went on the road to play Pflugerville on Tuesday, Jan. 24. Both teams showcased stellar defense. Neither offense established a rhythm, resulting in a 0-0 tie.
Senior standout James Ramon nearly found the back of the net on numerous occasions, attempting three shots on goal. Fellow seniors Omar Cervantes, William Navarro, Thomas Trainor and Bryan Ponce each tallied three steals. Goalkeeper Ezra Gaona had a solid performance as he recorded four saves.
The Lady Bears’ home game versus Pflugerville was a similar, low-scoring battle. However, a big second half goal by the Lady Panthers was the difference and Bastrop lost 1-0.
The boys’ game against Hendrickson later in the week featured top-tier offensive firepower. Goal scorers for both teams brought their A-game, but the Hawks barely squeaked past the Bears to win 4-3.
Ramon was electric as he has been all season, scoring all three of Bastrop’s goals.
The Lady Bears traveled to Hendrickson on the same night and struggled to keep pace with the Lady Hawks.
At halftime, the Bears still had a chance down 2-1. The Lady Hawks continued to cash in goals, though, outsourcing the Bears 4-1 in the second half to secure a 6-2 victory.
The Bears squads will look to respond this week. They square off against East View on Tuesday, Jan. 31, and Pflugerville Connally on Friday, Feb. 3.
