Elgin High School’s football program is still reaping the benefits of a magical 2022 season.

Head coach Heath Clawson recently earned Coach of The Year honors among 5A – region 8 schools. The award was given by the Texas High School Coaches Association.

“It is very humbling as there are many great coaches deserving of this award,” Clawson said. “It is a reflection of our entire team and operation. These recognitions are always due to a lot of people coming together, working hard to accomplish a common goal.”

Clawson credited his staff and players for sharing a vision, trusting the process and working endlessly immediately after the 2021 season. He also thanked the parents, teachers, administrators and the community for their support.

“I am so honored and proud that all the hard work has brought such positive recognition to our team, program, school and town,” Clawson said.

This past season, the Elgin Wildcats finished 7-3, were district runners-up and clinched their first playoff appearance since 2014. Their success on the field was especially impressive given their 0-10 record the previous year, marking an unprecedented turnaround.

According to Clawson, the Coach of The Year accolade and the team’s overall success proved that a culture can change if everyone comes together and believes in a common goal.

“We have kids who are hungry to be successful, and they will show up to put in the work when given the opportunity and direction,” Clawson said. “They are coachable and hard working. We have worked hard to raise the standard, and we are now working to raise it even more.”

The Elgin football program now faces the challenge of sustaining a winning culture. Clawson said the team needs to have the same sense of urgency they had after 2021.

“Our players must put in the extra work and continue to trust the process and the coaches to improve again in 2023,” Clawson said.
