The Elgin High School varsity baseball team continued its strong play in 5A-District 23 this past week as the Wildcats picked up two shutout wins over Bastrop High School.
ELGIN WILDCATS 9, BASTROP BEARS 0
The Wildcats picked up a 9-0 victory Thursday, April 11 as Elgin celebrated senior night for Alex Gamez, Austin Miller, Nathen Lewis, Jonah Crowell and Dennis Lavigne.
Elgin got on the board against Bastrop in the bottom of the second inning when junior Cason Nalle hit a two-run double that scored fellow junior Jalen Owens and Lewis for an early 2-0 lead. The Wildcats struck again with two outs as Miller came up clutch with a bases-clearing double to go up 5-0 as Nalle, junior Fernando Ramirez and sophomore Tyson McFarlin scored.
Another scoring outburst came for the Wildcats in the bottom of the fourth inning as they put the game out of reach from the visiting Bears. McFarlin had an RBI double, Owens drove in a run, Miller scored on an error and Owens also came in to score on a Bastrop error.
It was a strong effort on the mound for Wildcats junior Jack Grames as he threw a complete seven innings with seven strikeouts, only four hits allowed to Bears batters, just one walk issued and no runs given up.

In a pitchers’ duel April 12 on the road at Bastrop, the Wildcats were able to get the job done in a 2-0 victory over the Bears.
Owens dominated on the mound as he went the full seven innings with 13 strikeouts, just two hits allowed, only four walks issued and zero runs surrendered as Elgin picked up its fourth consecutive shutout win in district play.
Elgin made its only two runs of the game count in the top of the first inning as Miller and junior Malakai Hibbs hit consecutive sacrifice flies to go up 2-0, a lead that would hold the rest of the way for the Wildcats.
Despite the loss, Bastrop sophomore Val Regalado had himself a strong outing for the Bears as he pitched seven frames with seven strikeouts, only four hits allowed and two runs given up in the first inning.
Elgin (12-15 overall, 7-3 district record), under Head Coach Jason Bourgeois, fell 3-0 in a non-district game Saturday at Leander Glenn High School. The Wildcats resumed district play Tuesday at Pflugerville High School and will return home Friday, April 19 at 7 p.m. for a rematch with the Pflugerville Panthers on Elgin Little League Night.
Bastrop (10-17 overall, 5-5 district record), under Head Coach Daniel Carrillo, played host Tuesday to rival Cedar Creek High School and will have a rematch Friday at 7 p.m. on the road against the Eagles.
