SMITHVILLE — The Smithville High School varsity baseball team was in action this past week and picked up two crucial 4A-District 22 victories over Manor New Tech High School.
SMITHVILLE TIGERS 11, NEW TECH TITANS 3
The Tigers opened the week Wednesday, April 10 with a dominant 11-3 victory on the road against the Titans.
Smithvi l le scored three runs in the top of the first inning, added three more runs in the third frame, scored twice in the fourth inning and added three more insurance runs in the seventh frame to cap off the win over New Tech.
Kyle Pietsch finished a triple short of the cycle for Smithville as he went 3-for-4 with a team-high four runs batted in and four runs scored, while Grayson Mullen and Trip Davis also drove in two runs apiece. Layne Kimball was 2-for-3 and drove in one run, while Payton Lynch was 1-for-3 and scored three times for the Tigers.
Raando Arpero got the start for Smithville and pitched 3.2 innings with two unearned runs allowed, while Jaxson Frazier came in to pitch three innings in relief with four strikeouts and one unearned run surrendered to the Titans.
SMITHVILLE TIGERS 11, NEW TECH TITANS 9
Smithville battled back Friday, April 12 at home from deficits of 3-0 and 5-2 to win an 11-9 slugfest over New Tech to take the series. The Tigers used a crucial five-run fifth inning to rally past the Titans and eventually held on in the final frame.
Pietsch, Kimball and Arpero all drove in two runs apiece for Smithville, while Lynch and Frankie Andrada both had one RBI each in a must-win game.
Smithville (8-13-1 overall, 4-3 district record), under Head Coach Jason Peterson, played host Tuesday to Taylor High School and will travel Friday, April 19 at 7 p.m. for a district rematch with the Ducks.
