Wildcats pounce on Panthers

The Elgin Wildcats baseball team led beginning to end Friday night against the visiting Pflugerville Panthers.

In the bottom of the first, Alex Gamez hit a single to center field, which drove in Tyson McFarlin. Later in the inning, Trey Flores pinch runs for Gamez, and steals second. After a fly ball to right field, Flores tagged up and made it home to score a run.

The Wildcats extended their lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the second inning with runs by Fernando Ramirez, Bryce Barron and Jack Grames.

A double by Barron drove in Carson Nalle, which pushed the lead to 6-0 in the third inning.

The Wildcats kept the Panthers off the board, and scored their last run in the bottom of the fifth. Barron struck again with a ground ball to center field that brought in Nate Lewis.

Jalen Owens was on the mound for the Wildcats and earned the win. Over seven innings, he gave up one hit and no runs while striking out eight batters.

Barron led Elgin with two runs batted in, going 2-for-2 at the plate. Barron, along with Lewis, each had two hits in the game. Ramirez and Mc-Farlin led the team with two bases on balls each.

The Wildcats had four steals and turned one double in the game.

Elgin is now 14-14 overall, and sits second in district with a 9-3 record. The Wildcats hosted the Hendrickson Hawks Tuesday, April 23, and are on the road against Hendrickson Friday, April 26 at 7 p.m.
