PFLUGERVILLE — Strong hitting couldn’t get the Elgin Lady Wildcats over the hump against the Hendrickson Lady Hawks last week.
Elgin out-hit Hendrickson three to one, but it was still not enough as the Lady Wildcats fell 3-2 on the road.
After a wild pitch in the second inning, the Lady Hawks got on the board.
Trinity Martinez, who led the Lady Wildcats with two hits, singled in the fourth inning to help get Elgin score their first run of the game.
Hendrickson capitalized on another wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth to increase their lead to 2-1.
Elgin gave up another run in the sixth inning after a line drive to right field.
In the top of the seventh, the Lady Wildcats made one last effort to steal the win. With one out, and two on base, Mackenzie Farris pops out to centerfield, which allowed Nadia Sagastume to tag up and reach home plate, cutting the lead 3-2. A line out to third base closed out the game for the Lady Hawks to seal the victory.
In addition to strong hitting, the Lady Wildcats had a good showing on the mound. Jessica Cantrell started the game and pitched six innings allowing three runs on one hit. Cantrell also sat down 16 batters and walked three.
Bianca Galindo led the Lady Wildcats with two stolen bases. Martinez went 2-for-2 with a run batted in.
The Lady Wildcats are 18-8 overall, 11-3 in district. They are set to host the McCallum Lady Knights in the first round of the playoffs Thursday, April 25 at 7 p.m.
