Wildcats slash Raptors, win bi-district

The Elgin Wildcats have clawed their way into the area round of the playoffs after knocking off Liberal Arts and Science Academy last week.

Due to conditions at Nelson Field in Austin, the game was shifted to Elgin High School May 3, followed by game two, and three if necessary, Saturday May 4 in Elgin.

The Wildcats made sure a third game was not needed picking up two big wins 16-5 Friday and 11-1 Saturday to claim the bi-district championship.

In game one, Austin Miller went four for four at the plate, including a triple in the third, a double in the fourth and singles in the first and sixth innings.

LASA put two runs on the board in the first, and kept Elgin scoreless until the third inning.

Miller’s triple was enough to bring home Trey Flores for their first run. Jalen Owens bunted, which allowed Miller to reach home plate.

With only one out, Owens was able to get home on a passed ball by LASA, giving Elgin the lead 3-2.

The Wildcats never looked back, adding five runs on two hits in the top of the fourth inning.

They continued lighting up the scoreboard with six runs on five hits in the top of the sixth inning. An error scored a run and McFarlin drew a walk scoring a run. Gamez doubled and scored a run, along with a Miller single and run batted in. Nate Lewis also added a double to score a run, followed by another run on a balk.

Elgin carried a comfortable 16-2 lead going into the final frame, where they gave up three more runs to pick up the win 16-5.

Jack Grames earned the win for the Wildcats. The southpaw pitcher only allowed seven hits and five runs over six innings. He also had five strike outs and walked two batters.

The Wildcats had 13 hits and were led by Bryce Barron with two hits at three at-bats. Miller, Owens, Gamez and Cason Nalle each had two RBIs for the Wildcats. Miller also nabbed two stolen bases in the game.

Game two was more of the same when the Wildcats ran away with the win 11-1.

Elgin is set to play Magnolia West Thursday, May 9, 7 p.m. at Caldwell High School. Game two will be Friday, May 10 7 p.m. at Fireman’s Park in Brenham. Game three, if necessary, will return to Caldwell Saturday, May 10 at 2 p.m.

Wildcats catcher Alex Gamez looks to throw out a runner.
