BASTROP — The city’s annual celebration honoring Bastrop’s rich pioneer spirit returns this weekend, offering a nostalgic journey back in time free to the public.
Bastrop Museum and Visitor Center’s Yesterfest festivities kick off May 24 with the highly anticipated Beard and Moustache Competition at 602 Brewing Company, 8 p.m.
Participants will gather to showcase their bearded styles and compete for a selection of prizes. Facial hair fanatics will vote for the best ginger, old-time and crowd favorite beard, with mustachioed competitors also vying for the most creative honors.
Downtown Bastrop will continue the old-fashioned hootenanny May 25, coming alive with three stages full of folk, melody and story.
According to organizers, Yesterfest is an immersive experience featuring historical re-enactors, a Native American tepee and drum circle and pioneer skills demonstrations. Families can participate in engaging pioneer activities like hoop rolling and corn husk doll-making. Attendees can come watch a trail-experienced chuck wagon in action as well as see an old-fashioned bowling alley set up in a tented saloon.
“We are thrilled to bring Yesterfest back once again to historic Downtown Bastrop, especially to kick off Memorial Day Weekend,” said Nancy Wood, museum director. “This event is the 28th year celebrating our community’s rich heritage and is a wonderful opportunity for families to enjoy a day filled with music, entertainment and cultural experiences.”
