The Elgin Wildcats were overpowered by the Montgomery Bears in a 67-26 loss Friday, Sept. 6, marking their third defeat of the season.
The varsity football team’s defense was unable to contain Montgomery’s rushing attack, surrendering 399 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground. Elgin’s defensive woes were evident as the Bears exploited both the run and the pass.
Montgomery’s offensive onslaught featured four players rushing for at least 60 yards and five players scoring rushing touchdowns. The secondary also struggled, giving up 232 yards and two touchdowns through the air.
Despite a few bright spots from the Wildcats' offense, including touchdown drives led by sophomore quarterback Dylan Owens and junior wide receiver Gary Anderson Jr., Elgin couldn’t keep up with Montgomery’s relentless scoring.
Bears senior quarterback Reggie Williams threw for 144 yards and a touchdown, while senior running back Damion Taylor added 95 rushing yards and a touchdown.
This game marks the second consecutive week Elgin’s defense has allowed over 60 points, following a 62-point loss to Anderson. The Wildcats’ defense is now conceding an average of 53 points per game, while their offense has yet to surpass 30 points in a game this season.
Elgin will aim to turn things around as they travel to face Austin McCallum in their first district game of the season. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20.
