The Bastrop Bears’ promising start quickly faded as they fell 31-14 to the Prestonwood Christian Lions Friday, Sept. 13.
Despite an explosive beginning with two early touchdowns, the Bears couldn’t maintain their momentum, allowing the Lions to dominate the rest of the game with 31 unanswered points.
Sophomore quarterback Weston Nielson led the Bears' offense, throwing for 279 yards and two touchdowns.
Bastrop started strong, taking an early lead with a quick touchdown before senior wide receiver Keyshon Moore extended it with a 49-yard touchdown catch, making it 14-0. Moore finished the game with 157 receiving yards and a touchdown, while senior wide receiver Ramonz Adams added 101 receiving yards.
After their initial success, the Bears' offense stalled, failing to score for the remainder of the game.
One key issue for Bastrop was their lack of a running game, managing only 38 rushing yards. Senior running back La-Dainian Merino was limited to 25 yards on 12 carries, a season low for him.
The Lions capitalized on the Bears' struggles, putting up 31 consecutive points.
Bastrop’s defense had difficulty containing Prestonwood’s ground attack, allowing 241 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
Senior running back Caiden Collins led the charge for the Lions with 141 yards and a touchdown. Lions quarterback Luke Glass went 9 of 10 for 159 yards and a touchdown, finding his top target, junior wide receiver Matthew McClain, for 118 yards and a score. Senior wide receiver Takashi Shaw also contributed 65 yards and a touchdown.
This marks Bastrop’s second consecutive loss, bringing their record to 1-2 for the season. The Bears will look to bounce back as they begin district play, facing the Crockett Cougars on the road Thursday, Sept. 19, at 7:30 p.m.
