The Elgin Wildcats varsity football team celebrated their first win of the season with a 50-26 victory over the McCallum Knights Friday, Sept. 20.
The Wildcats’ offense showcased its strength, overwhelming the Knights' defense with a relentless scoring attack.
Elgin's passing game was pivotal, accounting for five touchdowns through the air. Sophomore quarterback Dylan Owens threw for 152 yards and three touchdowns, while senior quarterback Jalen Owens contributed 50 yards and two touchdowns.
The Wildcats began the game strong, scoring a safety before allowing an early touchdown, putting the score at 6-2 in the first quarter. Elgin quickly responded with a 36-yard touchdown pass, regaining the lead at 9-6 in the second quarter. From there, the Wildcats took control, scoring 27 unanswered points to extend their lead to 36-6 in the third.
Although McCallum managed to respond with a couple of touchdowns, the Elgin offense proved too potent, closing out the game with two additional touchdowns to surpass the 50point mark for the first time this season.
Defensively, the Wildcats were led by senior linebacker Jackson Clowdus and junior middle linebacker Matthew Clear, both recording 11 total tackles, including two for loss. The Wildcats also tallied three sacks and forced one turnover.
With this victory, Elgin improved to 1-3, while McCallum fell to 2-2. The Wildcats will aim to start district play 2-0 as they host Pflugerville Friday, Sept. 27 at 7:30 p.m.
