BASTROP – The Bastrop High School varsity football team exploded offensively against the Crockett Cougars Sept. 19 in its first district game of the season, securing a 69-6 victory in the Bears' most impressive showing of the season.
Sophomore quarterback Weston Nielson led the offensive charge, throwing for 150 yards and two touchdowns. His primary target, senior wide receiver Keyshon Moore, delivered a standout performance with 119 receiving yards and a touchdown. Backup senior quarterback Quinntaelyn Joyner also made an impact, contributing 100 yards and two total touchdowns.
The Bears established an early lead and never looked back, showcasing a powerful rushing attack that totaled over 235 yards and six touchdowns. Senior running back Ladainian Merino led the way with 73 yards and two scores, while junior running back Miles Johnson added 43 yards and two touchdowns.
Defensively, Bastrop was equally formidable, allowing just one touchdown. Senior free safety Andy McCarcus stood out with seven total tackles, including three for loss, and a fumble recovery. Junior defensive lineman Tiki Hola and sophomore defensive end Austin Moilan also made key contributions, with Hola recording two tackles for loss and Moilan notching the team's only sack.
With this victory, the Bears improved their record to 2-2, while Crockett fell to 0-4. Bastrop will aim to go over .500 as they continue district play at home against McCallum on Friday, Sept. 27 at 7:30 p.m.
