The Smithville Tigers varsity football team faced a tough challenge against the Jarrell Cougars, losing 35-14 in their first district game.
This defeat marks the fourth consecutive loss for the Tigers as they search for their first win of the season.
Despite the final score, the game was closer than it appeared, with both defenses managing to force quick possessions. Smithville limited the Cougars to just 14 points in the first half, even scoring a touchdown to trail 14-7 heading into the third quarter.
The second half saw increased scoring as Jarrell extended its lead to 21-7 with a 70-yard breakaway touchdown run by junior fullback Jaysen Hobbs. The Tigers responded with a rushing touchdown of their own, narrowing the score to 21-14. However, the Cougars proved too strong for Smithville, scoring 14 unanswered points, including two more rushing touchdowns by Hobbs, to seal the game at 35-14.
Top performers for the Tigers included junior running backs Eric Thompson and Justin Gurley. Thompson rushed for 97 yards and a touchdown, while Gurley totaled 150 yards on the ground. Junior quarterback Trip Davis also contributed a touchdown.
