SMITHVILLE – Bastrop County residents are encouraged to bring out their paints for proper disposal Oct. 12 during the annual Hazardous Household Waste Clean Up event.
Mixing chemicals and flammable materials in regular waste bins can release toxic fumes or cause fires, while improper disposal of solvents can contaminate soil and water, according to representatives.
This year's event, focused solely on paint, aims to prevent such risks by offering a safe way to dispose of aerosol paint cans, latex and oilbased paints, varnishes, strippers, thinners and stains.
Vouchers are required for collection, and residents must provide proof of address with a utility bill or driver’s license. Vouchers can be picked up at the Bastrop County Development Services office, 211 Jackson St., Smithville City Hall, 317 Main St., or the Lee County Annex, 898 E. Richmond St. in Giddings. They are also available online at www. co.bastrop.tx.us/page/ ds.household_waste.
The disposal site, located at 109 Taylor St. in Smithville, will be open from 9 a.m. to noon.
