The Bastrop Bears varsity football team will host Plugerville Connally Cougars on Friday, Oct. 11. The Bears are coming off a bye as they hope to continue their two-game win streak.
The Bastrop offense has been impressive, averaging 37 points per game. Sophomore quarterback Weston Nielsen leads the Bastrop offense accounting for 1,328 passing yards and 14 touchdowns. His top targets this year have been senior wide receivers Keyshon Moore and Jaelyn Gratten. Moore has 573 yards and four touchdowns, while Gratten has 370 yards and four scores on the year.
Senior running back Ladanian Merino is the leading rusher for the Bears with 294 yards and four touchdowns. Senior quarterback Braden Pleasent leads the Cougars offense averaging 30.6 points per game. His top target had been sophomore wide receiver Jonah Garcia.
The Bear's defense has been inconsistent this season giving up 20.4 points per game. Bastrop will be coming out of its bye week hoping to improve on these inconsistencies as they face a Cougars team that can take advantage of the Bears defensive struggles. Junior defensive lineman Tiki Hola has led the defense this season with 44 tackles on the year.
Some other notable players are sophomore defensive end Austin Molian and senior defensive back Ramonz Adams. Molian leads Bastrop in sacks with three, while Adams has two interceptions on the year.
The game is set to kick off at 7:30 p.m. at Bastrop Memorial Stadium.
