COUPLAND — The Coupland Civic Organization will host its annual Choo Choo Fest Oct. 20, raising funds to restore its historic caboose neighboring the Coupland Depot.
Proceeds from previous years have funded repairs to the caboose’s exterior, installation of a new roof and windows, leveling of the structure and placement on fresh ties and ballast. The original door was also repaired, and a second door was built to match.
“Our historic caboose represents a step back in time and needs to be preserved as an important part of our country’s transportation history,” CCO President Susan Schmidt said ahead of last year’s celebration. “Even though it is not totally restored yet, people already love to visit and take pictures. Our ultimate goal is to have a children’s museum in the caboose where children can climb the ladder, view surroundings from the cupola atop the car and experience history.”
The event will take place inside and on the grounds of St. Peter’s Church of Coupland, beginning at 11:15 a.m. with a barbecue lunch prepared by Coupland’s Master Chef Peter Wabbel. The menu includes sausage, pork loin and chicken drumsticks, with homemade sides provided by CCO members, alongside a bake sale.
The Kiddie Express train will offer free rides around Coupland from noon to 2 p.m., and the Homestead Petting Zoo will make its return.
Tickets are available in advance from Judy Downing at 512-293-0501 or Becky Sutton at 512-2698571. A limited number will be sold at the door. Plates are $15 for adults and $7 for children ages four to eight. Collectible caboose T-shirts and other merchandise will also be for sale.
