BASTROP — Bastrop Independent School District made strides toward the future with a groundbreaking ceremony for its ninth elementary school Oct. 1.
The campus is set to open next August in the new Adelton subdivision of the city.
“This is not just the construction of a building,” said School Board Vice President Chris Dillon. “It’s the creation of a space where young minds will grow, friendships will form and futures will be shaped.”
The new 105,000-squarefoot facility was funded by the district’s latest bond, approved by Bastrop ISD voters in May 2023. The $321.5 million bond will also support the construction of another elementary school, renovations and expansions at multiple campuses — including converting two intermediate schools into middle schools — a multipurpose facility for BISD Police administration and safety and security upgrades.
“This marks the third new campus we’ve opened in just the past three years,” Superintendent Barry Edwards said. “Before 2022, it had been over a decade since we opened a new school in BISD — Cedar Creek High School back in 2009.”
Citizens Advisory Task Force members Evan Moilan and Josh Coy also provided remarks during the ceremony.
The district is currently accepting nominations to name Elementary #9, as well as the two future middle schools. To submit a nomination, visit bisdtx.org/NameOur-Schools. Nominations close Oct. 11, and additional information about the school will be available closer to its opening.
