Gov. Greg Abbott and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board have introduced a new Direct Admissions initiative aimed at simplifying the college application process for local students.
The program offers an easier way for students to discover which Texas colleges or universities they qualify for, even before completing their applications, according to the governor’s office.
“Ensuring the next generation of Texans has access to the best educational opportunities is a priority,” Gov. Abbott said. “With Direct Admissions, the application process becomes less stressful for students and their families, making it easier to choose the right Texas college or university. Together, we’re building a brighter future for Texas students and our state’s workforce.”
Interim Commissioner of Higher Education Sarah Keyton noted that Direct Admissions addresses the challenges students face when applying for college, helping boost confidence and increasing transparency.
“This initiative can encourage more students, including those who may have hesitated to apply, to pursue higher education,” Keyton added.
Fred Farias, THECB chairperson, emphasized the program’s impact on both students and the state’s economy, saying “Direct Admissions will help more students achieve their educational goals while ensuring a skilled workforce for Texas’ growing economy.”
Through Direct Admissions, students can input academic information like class rank, GPA and standardized test scores into their My Texas Future profile. As early as their junior year, they can receive a list of par t icipating Texas institutions where they qualify for admission.
Students will still need to complete the formal application via ApplyTexas, where their academic information is verified, and scholarship opportunities can be assessed.
If a student doesn’t qualify for direct admission, they can still apply through the traditional process, according to the office.
Development of Direct Admissions was supported by philanthropic contributions through the Texas Higher Education Foundation, a nonprofit partner of the THECB.
Direct Admissions is part of a suite of tools from THECB, including ApplyTexas and My Texas Future, that simplify the pathway to higher education for Texas students.
