The Bastrop Bears varsity football team rolled over the Pflugerville Connally Cougars Oct. 11, winning 67-21 behind a dominant performance from sophomore quarterback Weston Neilson, who racked up 375 yards and seven total touchdowns.
Bastrop’s offense came out strong, scoring on its first three drives to jump to a 19-7 lead in the first quarter. Although Connally tightened the gap with a touchdown to make it 19-13, the Bears quickly shifted the momentum. Their defense shut down the Cougars for the rest of the half while the offensive lineup exploded for 28 unanswered points, building a commanding 47-14 halftime lead. Tight end Brent Carter had a standout first half with two touchdown catches and 160 receiving yards. Senior wide receivers Ramonz Adams and Jaylen Gratten also contributed to the Bears' aerial attack, combining for three touchdown receptions.
The Bears’ dominance extended into the second half, where they scored three more times while limiting the Cougars to one final touchdown. Senior running back Ladainain Merino led the ground game with 75 yards and a touchdown, while senior athlete Quintaeyln Joyner broke loose for a 72-yard touchdown run.
With the win, Bastrop improved to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in district play, extending their winning streak to three games.
The Bears will look to keep their momentum going when they face Navarro on the road Friday, Oct. 18, at 7:30 p.m.
