BASTROP — The Bastrop Bears varsity football team overpowered the Navarro Vikings in a commanding 70-0 victory Friday, Oct. 18, marking their highest-scoring game of the season and extending their win streak to four games.
Senior quarterback Quintaelyn Joyner set the tone early with a 35-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Ramonz Adams, putting Bastrop on the board with a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. Joyner finished the night with 75 passing yards and three touchdowns.
Sophomore quarterback Weston Neilson, typically the starter, also had an impressive outing. He connected with sophomore wide receiver Diego Rangel for his first touchdown pass, stretching the Bears’ lead to 21-0 in the opening quarter. Neilson racked up 130 passing yards and three touchdowns of his own.
By halftime, the Bears had built a 49-0 lead with help from senior running back Ladianian Merino, who totaled 45 rushing yards and contributed both a rushing and a receiving touchdown. Bastrop's defense was unrelenting, preventing Navarro from entering the team’s territory and securing their first shutout of the season.
The Bears slowed down in the third quarter but added to their lead with another touchdown pass from Joyner to Rangel, making it 56-0 by the fourth quarter. Junior Bryce Cosgrove and sophomore Izaiah Regalado rounded out the scoring with rushing touchdowns.
Senior tight end Brent Carter and senior wide receiver Jaelyn Gratten also had standout performances, each catching a touchdown and continuing to be key offensive threats for the Bears.
With the win, Bastrop improved to 5-2 overall and 4-0 in district play. They’ll aim to maintain their momentum when they host Elgin on Friday, Oct. 25. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
