Smithville football remains winless

SMITHVILLE — The Smithville Tigers varsity football team continued to struggle, falling 44-0 to the Lago Vista Vikings Oct. 18, marking their seventh straight loss as they remain in search of their first win this season.

Offensively, the Tigers were stif led, managing just 168 total yards. Known for their reliance on the run, Smithville was limited to 110 rushing yards, with junior running backs Eric Thompson and Justin Gurley leading the way. Thompson recorded 68 rushing yards, while Gurley added 41.

Junior quarterback Trip Davis, who started under center, completed 7 of 13 passes for 58 yards, but turnovers plagued the Tigers. Davis lost two fumbles, and Gurley contributed another, giving the Vikings a short field and putting extra strain on an already struggling defense.

Smithville has now allowed 40 or more points in six of its seven games.

The Tigers will attempt to secure their first win of the season as they hit the road to face the Navarro Panthers on Friday, Oct. 25. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
