The Smithville Tigers varsity football team struggled to stop the run in a 45-15 loss to the Navarro Panthers on Friday, Oct. 25. The Tigers dropped to 0-8 overall and 0-4 in dist rict play, while the Panthers improved to 4-5 overall and 3-2 in the district.
Smithville's defense was unable to contain Navarro’s rushing attack, allowing the Panthers to build a 21-0 lead with three long runs in the first half. The Tigers managed to cut the deficit to 21-7, but Navarro quickly responded with 17 unanswered points, extending the lead to 38-7 in the third quarter. Smithville added one more score late in the game, but it wasn’t enough as they continued to struggle this season.
Despite the loss, junior running back Justin Gurley stood out offensively, rushing for 120 yards and a touchdown. Junior quarterback Tripp Davis also had a solid performance, completing 10 of 18 passes for 171 yards.
The Tigers will continue their search for their first win of the season when they host Wimberley on Friday, Nov. 1 at 7:30 p.m.
