The Elgin Wildcats boys' and girls' varsity basketball teams both suffered defeats Friday, Nov. 8., with the boys losing their season opener to the McCallum Knights, 52-46, and the Lady Wildcats falling 49-20 to the Manor Mustangs.
Elgin’s boys struggled early as McCallum's fastpaced offense built a 14-4 lead in the first quarter. While sloppy play and turnovers allowed the Knights to control the tempo, Elgin found momentum in the second quarter, going on a 16-7 run to pull within one point at 21-20. McCallum responded by rebuilding its lead to 48-36, capitalizing on three-pointers.
Despite a late push from Elgin, the comeback fell short, leaving the Wildcats with a 0-1 start to the season.
The Lady Wildcats kept it close in the first quarter, trailing just 11-8. However, the Mustangs took control in the second with a 17-4 run. Elgin's offense struggled in the third quarter, failing to score against Manor's high-pressure defense.
The Mustangs recorded 27 steals, limiting Elgin’s ability to maintain possession and extending their lead through the rest of the game.
Both Elgin teams will look to rebound Nov. 15. The boys will go on the road to play Waco at 7 p.m., after a weekday matchup with the Rockdale Tigers, and the Lady Wildcats will visit Navarro, 8 p.m., following their earlier bout with the Eastside Early College Panthers.
