BASTROP — The Bastrop Convention Center buzzed with energy last month as over 200 attendees gathered for the inaugural Bastrop County Local Food Fair.

The event celebrated the region’s agricultural heritage and the expanding local food economy, highlighting the importance of supporting sustainable food systems.

A distinguished panel of experts led insightful discussions on the challenges and opportunities of a local food network, attendees said. The panel included Harold 'Skip' Connett, co-founder of Green Gate Farms; Sue Beckwith, executive director of the Texas Center for Local Food; Michelle Akindiya, education director for Farmshare Austin; and Willy Culberson, owner of The Culberson Cattle Company.

Topics ranged from why people buy locally grown food to the role of community advocacy and solutions for overcoming the unique obstacles faced by local farmers.

'This event is a testament to the community’s commitment to building a thriving local food economy,' Beckwith said. 'It’s a step forward in connecting farmers and consumers, fostering relationships that keep resources within our community.'

The fair also spotlighted key priorities from the Bastrop County Local Food Action Plan, with a focus on strengthening the county’s local food systems.

Organizers stated they hope events like this will stimulate economic growth, improve food security and preserve Bastrop’s agricultural heritage.

With plans already underway for next year’s fair, the team aims to build on this success and provide even more opportunities to celebrate and fortify Bastrop’s local food network.
