SMITHVILLE — The Smithville Tigers varsity basketball team is off to a challenging start this season, losing its first four games by at least 30 points in each matchup.
The Tigers’ season opened with an 86-31 loss to the Navarro Vikings, where they struggled offensively, shooting just 24% from the field.
Offensive issues have been a recurring problem for Smithville, which is averaging only 28 points per game.
Defensively, the team has faced similar difficulties, allowing more than 70 points per game in each of their first four contests.
The losses continued with a 58-26 defeat to the Eastside Early College Panthers, who shot 45% from the field. The Tigers then fell to the Taylor Ducks 71-33 and were defeated by the Bastrop Bears 72-23.
Despite these struggles, some players have stood out. Junior shooting guard Solomon Holland, junior point guard Landon Strain and freshman shooting guard Damien Fletcher have shown promise on both ends of the floor.
The Tigers will look to break out of their early slump when they host Hyde Park, Dec. 3, and head to Little River Academy for a three-game series from Dec. 5-7.
