SMITHVILLE — Smithville Tigers senior guard Arabella Gutierrez led the girls varsity basketball team to a dominant 61-29 win over the Snook Lady Jays Tuesday, Nov. 26, scoring a season-high 23 points.
Smithville controlled the game from the tipoff, opening with a 7-0 run. Senior guard Chelsea Hendrix hit a threepointer, while junior guard Sydnie Brenner and Gutierrez contributed layups. The Tigers ended the first quarter with a 13-2 lead.
Gutierrez would go on to score 10 consecutive points, giving Smithville a commanding 20-2 lead midway through the second quarter.
With a 30-7 halftime advantage, Smithville continued to control the game, closing out the game on a 31-22 run.
Other notable performers included juniors Elagah Brandyburg and Kenna Tinner, who scored nine and five points, respectively.
The Tigers improved to 5-2 on the season with the win, set to host La Vernia, Dec. 3, before competing in the Schulenburg Tournament from Dec. 5-7.
