Bears extend streak, top district

BASTROP — The Bastrop girls varsity basketball team didn’t cool down over winter break, riding a five-game winning streak and averaging over 60 points per game.

The Bears’ latest triumph came Friday, Jan. 3, with a commanding 65-43 victory over the Crockett Cougars.

While the team trailed 14-13 after the first quarter, Bastrop regained the lead by halftime, 26-24. The Bears broke away with a dominant third quarter performance, outscoring the Cougars 26-7 and earning the double-digit victory.

Senior guard Kenadee Lawhon paced the roster with 17 points, while senior forward Paytin Greene added 14. On the boards, sophomore forward Keelyn Johnson and senior forward Naveah Jones combined for 30 of Bastrop’s 55 rebounds.

The Bears now boast a 25-2 overall record and remain undefeated in district play at 5-0.

Bastrop will face Anderson, Jan. 7, before hosting McCallum Friday, Jan. 10, at 8 p.m.

McCallum (3-2) is currently tied for third in district standings.
