An early-season soccer tournament left the Wildcats with an even record, 2-2-1, after winning one of three at Manor New Technology High School last weekend.
Despite the split play, Elgin returned home content with valuable game knowledge, according to Head Coach Eddie Lerma.
“It helps us introduce different play styles. We try to play teams that show us different things so whenever we get into district play, we can adapt and have seen those strategies before,” Lerma said.
Elgin opened the series with a narrow 2-1 loss to KIPP Austin Collegiate. The boys held the lead first when senior Luis Cruz connected on a corner, but couldn’t keep the Cardinals from reaching the back of the net in the second half.
The Wildcats dropped their second matchup in similar fashion, losing to the Manor Mustangs 2-1 despite being first to reach the scoreboard. Cruz managed their only point again, off of a free kick.
Seven different players added goals to their record when the team took their frustrations out on IDEA South Flores with a 7-0 victory.
The Wildcats will next face Brenham, Jan. 14, before hosting Temple Friday, Jan. 17, at 5:30 p.m.
