Bears drop streak, return with win

BASTROP — The Bastrop girls varsity basketball team suffered their first district loss against the Anderson Trojans, 47-29, Jan. 7, but bounced back with a 59-37 win over the McCallum Knights Jan. 10.

With the split, the Bears improved to 26-3 overall and 6-1 in dist rict play. They will look to keep the momentum going against Richards School for Young Women Leaders Jan. 14, before traveling to Cedar Creek on Friday, Jan. 17.

Vs. Anderson

Bastrop struggled offensively in their first district defeat, shooting just 20% f rom the f ield and s c or ing a season-low 29 points.

The game was competitive early, with both teams trading baskets in the first quarter. Bastrop trailed 12-10 after the opening period, before offensive woes got the better of the Bears and they sunk down to a 7-point deficit at halftime. The game quickly slipped furt he r away in the third, as Anderson extended its lead to 37-20 heading into the final period. Bastrop, unable to rally, managed just six points in the fourth quarter.

Junior guard Kenadee Lawhon led the team with nine points, while sophomore forward Keelyn Johnson added eight.

Vs. McCallum

The Bears learned from their loss and returned with an emphatic win over the Knights, dominating from start to finish.

Bastrop’s offense came alive early, outscoring McCallum 17-11 in the first 8 minutes. The momentum carried on into the second quarter, where the girls went on a 20-6 run to take a commanding 37-17 halftime lead.

Despite a slower pace in the third period, sinking eight points, the Bears remained focused to close out the match with a 14-point run.

Lawhon and Johnson were once again standout performers, leading the team.
