Elgin’s varsity boys basketball roster split games last week, falling to Georgetown early before bouncing back with a win over Pflugerville Friday, Jan. 24.

Vs. Georgetown

The Wildcats fought hard but came up short in a 56-41 loss to the Eagles.

Elgin’s offense struggled early, trailing 10-5 after the first eight minutes and sinking to an 11point deficit at halftime.

The Wildcats found momentum in the third quarter, tallying 18 points to bring the game within reach, but tired play in the final minutes saw Georgetown pull away for the win.

Senior guard Amar Bermudez led Elgin with 14 points, while junior guard David Penson added 13.

Vs. Pflugerville

Elgin rebounded from the loss with a focused performance against the Panthers, going 62-49.

Senior guard Tyson Mc-Farlin gave the Wildcats an early spark, hitting a 3-pointer to take an initial lead, followed by a pair of long-range shots from Penson to end the first quarter up 13-7.

Elgin carried on with an 11-2 run to build a 15point lead, but Pflugerville responded with nine unanswered points of its own. McFarlin’s second 3-pointer of the game pushed the Wildcats’ edge to 27-18 at halftime.

After the break, Bermudez came out strong with a 3-pointer and Elgin maintained control with accurate shots and offensive hustle.

The Wildcats shot 45% from the field, 40% from beyond the arc.

Elgin now holds a balanced 13-13 overall record but sits seventh in the district at 2-6. The Wildcats are two games behind Weiss, occupying the fourth and final playoff spot in the standings.

The boys will return to action against Pflugerville Connally Jan. 28, followed by a road game in East View Friday, Jan. 31, at 7 p.m.
