The Wildcats dropped their first district match while hosting Hendrickson Friday, Jan. 24., after a strong season start on the pitch.
Elgin’s varsity boys soccer team fell 3-0 to the Hawks, behind a multigoal performance from junior midfielder Mateo Palma.
“This game didn’t go as we thought it was going to go,” Elgin Head Coach Eddie Lerma said. “We had a very strong preseason and had a 4-2-1 record. I would say some initial thought is we looked like deer in the headlights after that first goal.”
Hendrickson took just 10 minutes to find the back of the net, outmaneuvering Elgin off of a long throw from the sideline.
Fancy footwork and a strong pace on top of the ball from Palma quickly added two more goals, in minutes 16 and 18, securing the Hawks’ victory.
After the loss, the Wildcats’ winning percentage dropped to .562, potentially affecting their position in district standings. “We move on to the next game,” Lerma said. “We play wise and, you know, we try to get our first district win.”
Elgin will fight for that district victory Jan. 28, when the boys visit Weiss, before hosting Georgetown Friday, Jan. 31, at 7:15 p.m.
