Wildcats

A rough week for Elgin on the pitch, both the boys and girls varsity soccer teams dropped two games and remain winless in district play.

The Wildcats haven’t yet honed in on what gave them their early- season success.

Difficulty capitalizing on opportunities and hesitant play after falling behind early saw Elgin remain scoreless across its games — losing 3-0 to Weiss Jan. 28, and 1-0 against Georgetown Jan. 31.

The Wolves hit the back of the net twice in the first half and locked out the Wildcats for the last 45 minutes.

Elgin Head Coach Eddie Lerma has previously told the Courier that the team looks like “deer in the headlights” once they fall behind.

While the matchup with Georgetown was closer and the boys showed a strong defensive back four, they couldn’t break through offensively.

The Wildcats fell to 4-5-1 overall, 0-3 in the district, after the losses.

They’ll search for a midweek spark against Pf lugervi l le Feb. 4, before travel ing to Pflugerville Connally Friday, Feb. 7, for a 7:15 p.m. kick off.

Elgin’s girls also struggled offensively, scoring just one goal across both of their matchups.

The Lady Wildcats fell to Weiss 3-1, Jan. 28, after the Wolves took an early lead and turnovers cost Elgin potential shots at goal.

While responsive defensive play helped ward off Georgetown Jan. 31, a similarly lackluster offense couldn’t overcome the Lady Wildcats’ 1-0 deficit.

Elgin dropped to 4-3-2 overall and 0-3 in dist rict play. The Lady Wildcats will next face Pflugerville Connally at home Friday, Feb. 7, at 7:15 p.m.
