SMITHVILLE — Smithville’s second-half surge powered the Lady Tigers past Navasota 53-36 Friday, Jan. 31, keeping them in control of the district title race.
Sitting at 8-1 in district play, Smithville is now one win away from securing the championship.
Whi le senior Arabel la Gut ier rez set the tone early with a three-pointer, the girls found themselves trailing 28-19 before senior Sydnie Brenner sparked a comeback with fast breaks.
Smithville carried that momentum into the third quarter, quickly tying the game at 28.
Af ter a defensive standoff, Brenner put the Tigers ahead with another three-pointer, part of her 10-point quarter. She finished with a team-high 22 points.
In the final minutes, Smithville sealed the win at the free-throw line, going 9-for-13. The Lady Tigers’ defense clamped down, holding Navasota to just eight second-half points.
Gutierrez contributed 13 points, while junior Ladonije Lewis added nine as Smithv i l le closed the game on an 18-4 run.
Smithville will look to lock up the district title in their regular-season finale against Bellville Tuesday, Feb. 4.
