BASTROP — Bastrop came up just short in a battle for the district lead, falling 61-56 to Anderson Friday, Jan. 31.
The loss dropped the Bears to 31- 4 overall and 11-2 in district play, dimming their hopes for a district title.
Junior guard Kenadee Lawhon opened the game with a threepointer to give Bastrop an early 6-5 lead, but Anderson answered with a 6-0 run to pull ahead. Another three from Lawhon cut the deficit to 11-9, but the Bears trailed 20-16 after the first eight minutes.
Both defenses tightened in the second quarter, with Naevah Jones and Keyai ra Limuel cont rol l i ng the paint for Bastrop. Jones finished with two steals, two blocks and 16 defensive rebounds.
The Bears entered halftime down 32-27.
Lawhon kept Bastrop within strik ing distance in the third quarter, hitting back-to-back threes to trim Anderson’s lead to 44-43. She finished with 12 points, all from beyond the arc.
The Bear s trai led 49- 48 heading into the fourth and had a chance to tie the game but missed a fast-break opportunity.
Anderson sealed the win with a late threepointer.
J u n i o r fo r wa r d Keyaira Limuel led Bastrop with 24 points on 6-of-11 shooting. Anderson was led by Brooke Fuller with 19 points and Nonye Muoneme with 13.
Bastrop will close out the regular season on the road against Mc-Callum Tuesday, Feb. 4, before heading into the postseason.
