Student art contest to show ‘every drop counts’

Bastrop County’s water conservation authority has launched an art contest for local students, inviting them to explore the theme “every drop counts” with creativity.

The Lost Pines Groundwater Conservation District is encouraging young artists to submit work that reflects the importance of water conservation, with cash prizes ranging from $25 to $100. Pieces can show ways to save water at home, depict sustainability techniques or highlight anything that promotes proper groundwater care.

Teachers of winning students will also receive $50 to put towards classroom use.

The contest is open to public, private and homeschool students in three grade categories — kindergarten through third grade, fourth through sixth grade and seventh through 12th grade.

Submissions must be created by hand and turned in using the official entry form, available at lostpineswater.org.

The deadline for entries is March 31. Winners will be announced April 9 and awarded by the end of the month.

Water preservation and maintenance efforts are more important now than ever, according to LPGCD, as droughts and development have seen that the area is no exception in a global freshwater crisis.
