Elgin High School’s varsity soccer squads split wins against the Cedar Creek Eagles on Friday, Feb. 3.
The girls were victorious in their matchup versus the Lady Eagles, while the boys fell by multiple scores. The Lady Wildcats are 2-1 and rank fourth in district play. The boys team is 1-2 and sitting at the fifth spot.
In the girls game, sophomore sensation Dory Estrada drove in the first goal thanks to a gorgeous assist by Grace Segura on a free kick. It was Estrada’s eighth goal of the season which leads the team.
Elgin’s defense performed at an elite level throughout the contest, allowing just one shot on goal. However, Cedar Creek’s lone on-target shot resulted in a second half goal due to a miscommunication. The score was tied 1-1 with the game winding down.
Meanwhile, the Elgin offense fired off a number of shots on goal, but the Lady Eagles continued to make impressive saves. Finally, junior Courtney Shepard came up clutch with just under five minutes left to play. The veteran midfielder found the back of the net for the first time this season, giving Elgin a 2-1 lead in dramatic fashion. The Lady Wildcats hung on down the stretch to secure the victory.
Head coach Taylor Cansler credited defenders Tory McDonald, Bela Estrada, Isabella Montemayor, Abby Muñoz and goalkeeper Juliet Almazan for their stellar play against Cedar Creek and this season overall. The Lady Wildcats have shut out their opponents six times this season, which is one shy of last year’s total.
McDonald was named one of the top defenders of the week in Texas by Lethal Enforcer Soccer, acknowledging her top-tier defensive efforts.
The boys had an off night and lost 4-1 in their road matchup. Cedar Creek’s Alexis DeNova-Jaimes, Manny Carreno Medina and Juan Guerrero Perez all cashed in goals for the Eagles.
Both Elgin squads have three contests this week due to the winter storm causing last Tuesday’s game to be canceled. They will take on Georgetown Feb. 6, Bastrop Dec. 7 and Pflugerville Dec. 10.
