High school expansion project highlights modern tools, tech for tomorrow’s builders
CEDAR CREEK — Cedar Creek High School students in the Construction Technology I program took their education beyond the classroom when they toured the high school’s expansion project last week.
The visit offered an up-close view of career paths in the construction industry, from site supervision to project management and cutting-edge technology.
“It’s important for students to see in real life so they can make the determination if this is a career for them,” said Danny Pollard, Cedar Creek High School construction teacher.
Led by the site superintendent, assistant superintendent, project manager and assistant project manager, the tour highlighted how modern construction work relies on more than manual labor, according to the district. Students saw drones, 360-degree cameras and cloud-based software used to manage building plans.
“This experience helps them recognize that construction is more than just manual labor — it also involves innovation and advanced technology,” said Luis Medina, assistant project manager for general contractor Bartlett Cocke.
In addition to learning about the various career paths, students examined a job site in its early construction phase. They plan to return for another visit later in the build.
“I’m excited for our next walk. We’re passionate about what we do and eager to inspire and shape the minds of tomorrow,” Medina added.
Construct ion Technology I is part of the Carpentry/Construction Career & Technical Education program at Bastrop Independent School District.
