Officers have released the names of a man and woman found dead in a home in what police say appears to be a murder- suicide.

According to a release on the incident from the Elgin Police Department, an investigation “suggests this is a tragic case of domestic violence – murder/suicide.”

The dead are identified as Sirley M. Cunningham, 73, and Charles L. Cunningham, 82, a former financial director for the city.

“It’s heartbreaking to hear, they were a lovely couple,” said one neighbor, who wished to remain anonymous.

Officers discovered the bodies about 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, during a welfare check at 205 E. 11th St., according to the release.

“There have been no previous calls to the Cunningham residence,” according to the statement. “This is an isolated incident and there is no threat to the public.”

No additional details have been released, nor have investigators said whether autopsies to conclusively determine a cause of death have been ordered.
