More burns prep responders

Texas A&M Forest Service crews conducted more prescribed burns this week, light ing another 668 acres of Camp Swift property.

The Feb. 17 operation targeted three units — primarily grass and brush — to reduce hazardous fuels by as much as 75%, curb yaupon and cedar growth and provide training for state and local emergency responders.

Officials say the burn was conducted under strict weather parameters, minimizing the impact on nearby roads thanks to favorable ventilation conditions.

“By training under a controlled environment, we build healthier, more resi l ient landscapes,” the Forest Service noted, adding that additional burns may continue through May.

Collaborating agencies included Round Rock Fire Department, Camp Swift Training Center, North Bastrop County Fire Rescue, Texas Parks and Wildlife, New Waverly Fire Department and Bastrop County ESD No. 2.

While a smaller footpr int, Raven Env ironmental Ser v ices has also cont inued to blaze the area, recently burning 50 acres along Texas 95 to help improve wildlife conditions for the endangered local Houston Toad population.
