AUSTIN — A sixth-inning single from jun ior Addi son Ot to turned the tide for the Smithville Lady Tigers varsity softball team, sparking a 5-3 victory over the Westlake Chaparrals Feb. 19.
Otto’s base knock, combined with an errant throw, brought home two runs and proved the difference on a chilly Friday evening.
Smithville’s offense was quiet in the first two innings, trailing 1-0 early, until freshman Jessica Hinnant drove in junior Kenna Tiner with a double to even the score at 1.
After Westlake jumped ahead 3-1 in the bottom of the third on a two-run triple, the Lady Tigers responded with two runs in the fourth, including an RBI double from sophomore Kenzly White.
Otto also started in the circle, allowing three runs over three innings while striking out five. Hinnant took over in relief and dominated, fanning eight Chapar ra ls without conceding a run.
Three of Hinnant’s strikeouts came in the seventh inning, sealing the victory and improving Smithville’s record to 5-4.
The Lady Tigers next face Lexington Tuesday, Feb. 25, before heading to the Schulenburg tournament from Feb. 27 to March 1.
