A Smithville High School student-athlete officially announced his plans to play at the collegiate level.

Tyson Hancock put pen to paper on a delayed National Signing Day, Feb. 8, affirming that he will play college football at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. He earned first team all-district honors and the all-district utility player award in back-to-back seasons.

Hancock was utilized in a number of ways throughout his high school career as a runner, pass-catcher, defender and occasionally quarterback. Simply put, Hancock was a lethal offensive weapon who could pop off a big play at any given moment.

In 2022, Hancock caught 32 passes for 644 yards and five touchdowns. He also rushed for 538 yards and three scores on just 44 carries, averaging a whopping 12.2 yards per rush. When lined up at quarterback, Hancock threw for 292 and three touchdowns on thirteen completions.

Hancock also showcased his ability to take games over on defense as the team’s starting free safety. He racked up 90 tackles, five interceptions, four forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, eight tackles for loss, two sacks and a defensive score in 2022 alone.

In total, Hancock accounted for 1,474 yards and 12 touchdowns to follow a stellar junior year in which he scored 22 total touchdowns. Hancock played a vital role in helping the Tigers reach the playoffs the last two seasons and win a playoff game his senior year.
