The Elgin Wildcats varsity boys soccer team broke through for its first district win last week, finishing with a 2-2 draw against Hendrickson Feb. 19, and a 4-1 triumph over Pflugerville Weiss Friday, Feb. 21.
Elgin now stands at five wins, eight losses and two draws overall, 1-6-1 in district competition.
Vs. Hendrickson
Elgin opened strong, controlling possession and building a 2-0 halftime lead behind goals from sophomore Jorge Escobar and junior Aurelio Montoya.
According to Head Coach Eduardo Lerman, however, chilly weather conditions hampered the Wildcats in the second half, allowing Hendrickson to net two of its own and force a 2-2 tie.
Elgin pushed for a decisive goal but ultimately settled for the draw.
Vs. Pflugerville Weiss
Determined to improve, Elgin delivered a commanding performance against Pf lugerville Weiss, racing to a 3-1 lead by halftime.
Seniors Noddyn Bailey, Luiz Cruz and Montoya fueled the early surge.
The Wildcats learned from their mistakes and maintained their intensity in the second half, limiting Weiss’s offensive opportunities with a solid backline.
Junior Miguel Aguilar capped off the win with a late goal, sealing Elgin’s first district victory of the season.
Looking ahead, the Wildcats wi ll vi sit Georgetown Tuesday, Feb. 25, before returning home for a 7:15 p.m. matchup against Pflugerville Friday, Feb. 28.
