New contenders in county elections

The slate of candidates vying for seats on city councils and school boards across Bastrop County has been finalized for the May 3 general election.

In the Elgin City Council races, Ward 1’s Arthur Gibson and Ward 2’s Ya-Lecia Love run unop- posed, while Ward 3 will see incumbent Matthew Callahan face challenger Tiffany Pierre. In Ward 4, write-in candidate Stephanie Lippke and Liston Crim will contest the seat.

For the Elgin Independent School District board, District 4 offers voters a choice between incumbent Angie Edmon and challenger Teneisha Wilson, District 5’s Patrick Maass is unopposed and incumbent Jennifer Culver is matched by Barry Barker for District 7.

Bastrop’s municipal races feature a Place 1 contest between Perry Lowe and Cecilia Serna, while incumbent John Kirkland will face Cheryl Lee in Place 5.

Two candidates are vying for the mayoral seat left empty following Lyle Nelson’s resignation, though election officials have not yet confirmed details.

For Bastrop Independent School District, incumbent Trustee Chris Dillon is defending his Place 5 seat against John Eason, as Matthew Mix and Ashley Mutschink are unopposed for trustee positions in places 6 and 7.

In Smithville, incumbent Tyrone Washington runs unopposed in Place 1, Brandon Dunham competes for the seat with write-in candidate Cale Lammerts in Place 2 and Jimmy Jenkins seeks re-election against challenger Brian Wells in Place 3.

For the Smithville Independent School District board, only incumbents — Candice Parsons (Place 5), Josh Magden (Place 6) and Michael Hancock (Place 7) — filed for re-election, resulting in the election’s cancellation Feb. 24 Election officials remind residents that while the deadline for candidate applications has passed, the final day to register to vote is April 3, with early voting set to begin April 22.
