BISD multipurpose facility underway

BASTROP — Bastrop Independent School District has broken ground on its new multipurpose facility, a significant step forward in a sweeping district overhaul funded by the 2023 bond, representatives said.

Dirt work officially began last week on the project, which will serve as the home for BISD police administration and district operational support.

“The future is looking bright, and we can't wait to see the impact this new facility will have on our community,” the district said in its announcement.

The project is one of several initiatives supported by the May 2023 bond, which secured over $321 million following overwhelming voter approval. The bond not only paves the way for this new facility but also funds a range of improvements — from building new schools to upgrading existing facilities for the benefit of students and staff, according to the district.

Under the bond’s allocations, project spending is divided into three major categories.

The safety, security and operations segment, with a budget of just under $18 million, covers the construction of the multipurpose facility and the installation of additional security cameras at all schools.

In the major capital improvements category, $31 million is earmarked for renovations at schools, including exterior and interior upgrades, site improvements and new playground equipment.

The largest investment, around $273 million, is dedicated to new schools and classroom expansions. This includes building two new elementary schools, demolishing and replacing aging structures at Mina Elementary, transforming intermediate schools into middle schools, adding specialized spaces such as a dance studio and kiln room, constructing new academic buildings and expanding key facilities.

As Bastrop ISD moves forward with these projects, the district anticipates a strengthened, safer and more efficient environment that will benefit the entire community, representatives said.
