The Bastrop boys soccer squad dug themselves out from the bottom of district ranks, and the Lady Bears are clinging to the final playoff spot.

The boys won 2-0 on Friday, Feb. 17, over the Pflugerville Panthers, improving to 2-5-1 in district play, which is tied for the sixth seed. The Bastrop girls tied Pflugerville, 2-2, and currently rank fourth in district with a 3-4-1 record.

The boys seized control early in their matchup as they took a 1-0 lead early in the first half. Their defense was dominant, which led to lengthy possessions on the other end. The Bears scored again in the second half and hung on for the 2-point victory.

The Lady Bears found themselves in a back-and-forth battle. Each team traded goals in the first half, resulting in a 1-1 score going into halftime.

The second half was a similar story. The two squads traded goals once more and looked sharp on both ends of the field. Although the Lady Bears didn’t manage to win, the tie prevented them from plummeting in district standings.

For both teams, Friday night’s results were a solid response after suffering lopsided defeats to Georgetown earlier in the week. Next up, the Bastrop squads will square off against Hendrickson (Feb. 21) and East View (Feb. 24).
