Elgin will host this year’s countywide celebration for one of America’s civil rights pioneers.
On Monday, Jan. 16, the 34th Annual Walk for Peace, Justice, and Equality will begin at 10 a.m. The march is in remembrance of Martin Luther King Jr. on his namesake day.
The Bastrop County Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Commission presents the walk and celebration. The event rotates yearly between host cities in the county.
Elgin’s march will begin at Veterans Memorial Park, 109 Depot Street, and then head downtown toward Booker T. Washington Elementary School, 510 Martin Luther King Blvd. The walk will also include a stop at the Elgin Black Icons Mural. Parking will be available at the Elgin Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center, 114 Central Ave., the Elgin Depot Museum, 14 Depot Square, Elgin City Hall and library complex, 310 N Main St., and on streets throughout downtown.
A program will follow at 11 a.m. at the Booker T. Washington Elementary School gymnasium. Attendees can park at the school and at Thomas Memorial Park, 411 Madison St.
Martin Luther King Jr. is considered one of the most prominent civil rights leaders of the mid-20th century. He was assassinated in 1968, and Martin Luther King Jr. Day was established throughout the U.S. in 1971.
