The Elgin Wildcats varsity softball team are having a fantastic season, and they are getting contributions in all areas of the game.
The Lady Wildcats currently have an overall record of 19-8 and a district record of 8-1, with their only loss coming from the undefeated Georgetown Eagles.
The Lady Wildcats have found themselves racking up wins thanks to great pitching and hittingfrom the players up and down their lineup. Senior, Paiton Altmiller, and juniors, Jessica Cantrelland Jaylan Roberson, lead the team in batting stats thanks to their consistency at the plate.
The trio of Altmiller, Cantrell and Roberson are always in the mix when the Lady Wildcats start to rally and put runs on the board. Altmiller and Cantrell have been a nightmare for pitchers this season with the two players having a batting average of .423 and .405 respectively.
To put that into perspective, an elite level batting average is around .280-.300, and these athletes are well above that. Altmiller has recorded 33 hits this season along with 21 RBIs to add to her impressive batting average.
Meanwhile, Cantrell has recorded 30 hits, eight of which were home runs and 39 RBIs. Roberson, whose speed has been a nightmare for defenses this season, has 28 hits to her name with 18 RBIs and 35 runs scored. In addition, she has 10 stolen bases so far on the season.Roberson has used her speed to put her team in better positions to score runs and win games.
With great hitting on their side, the Lady Wildcats also have a duo of pitchers that have been taking care of business on the mound. Altmiller and Cantrell continue their domination by being two of the top pitchers in the district.
Altmiller has thrown 39 and 2/3 innings, posting a 4-1 record and striking out 33 batters in her time on the bump. But it is Cantrell who has controlled the mound for the Lady Wildcats, pitching 116 and 2/3 innings while striking out 233 batters while only walking 17.
Cantrell is also posting an ERA of 1.29 which is outstanding numbers for a pitcher that has yet to play their senior season. Cantrell was also fortunate enough to record her 500th career strikeout during a 17-0 win over Pflugerville Connally.
The Lady Wildcats have five games left on their district schedule, and with Cantrell and her teammates ready to dominate they set their sights on the ultimate prize that could come later in the spring.
