Local gardens will once again be recognized for the work going into their beauty.

The Elgin Garden Club has announced its April's Yard of the Month. Arthur Marseoni’s home, 203 Four Star Drive in the Saratoga Farms subdivision, receives spring's first honor.

“Marseoni’s yard features several beautiful rose garden areas with repeat bloomers so he can look forward to more color as the season continues,” said the Garden Club in a press release. “All he does is water and prune to enjoy blooming roses all year-round.”

Marseoni, owner of Marseoni Mediterranean Cuisine in Elgin, planted Double Knock Out rose bushes in 2018. At over three feet high, each rose bush has red or pink blooms and provides privacy from the street view, along with “a vibrant burst of color surrounding the front entrance.”

“This year has been an exceptionally difficult year for gardeners. Damaged trees and fallen limbs during Storm Mara have made it a challenge for traditionally mature plantings,” added the Garden Club. “Surviving and thriving after the storm proves the resilience of tried-and-true roses. .... Gardens and yards in recently built Elgin subdivisions provide opportunity to build community and beauty that lasts.

The Elgin Garden Club, a nonprofit organization, meets the first Tuesday monthly at 9:30 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall, 11th St. and U.S. 290. Visitors and new members are welcome to the sessions, which include a meet-and-greet, plant exchange, refreshments and a program. The club will host a plant sale and scholarship fundraiser May 6.

Elgin Garden Club members Cynthia Aranda and Debbie Wahrmund reported information for this story.
