Store reboot makes waves

City and charity leaders see benefits from a downtown store's revamp.

G&M Dry Goods is renaming to Elgin Dry Goods with changes to its look and product lines. A kickoff event will include sale proceeds for Community Cupboard, an Elgin food pantry.

“We love our community and decided that we should re-name our store Elgin Dry Goods”, said Molly Alexander, store co-owner.

Elgin Dry Goods will host Kendra Scott Jewelry Thursday, April 13, from 5 to 8 p.m. at their location at 20 N. Main St. The pop-up shop will give 20% of sales to Community Cupboard.

“We are excited to be part of this event,” expressed Claudia Smith, Community Cupboard treasurer. “You can shop for yourself, for Mother’s Day and know you are giving back to our community.”

The store will have a 1967 Shasta trailer in a temporary parklet in front of the store serving wine and beer samples.

“Molly and Gary are exemplary retail store owners,” said Amy Miller, city Community Development director. “I am excited they are bringing in more Texas brands such as Consuela and Ryan Candles and supporting local brands such as Sweet Life Soap. The new name, new lines and new events such as the Kendra Scott pop-up shop will bring even more energy to downtown and our community,”

New Elgin branded products will reportedly filter through the store in upcoming months as the look and feel changes.

“This is only the beginning. We love downtown Elgin and love being retailers,” added Alexander. “The store is keeping customer favorites such as the candy bar, gourmet food products and kid favorites such as Jelly Cat. The gift store and candy bar has been a mainstay in downtown Elgin for over eight years.”
