The Cedar Creek community traveled down the Yellow Brick Road last weekend.
Four straight shows from Dec. 6 to Dec. 8 showcased the talents of Cedar Creek High School’s musical theater program as they performed Frank L. Buam’s The Wizard of Oz.
According to first year director Tyrone D. Smith, the months of hard work and preparation leading up to the play paid off tremendously.
“It’s insane how much work goes into it,” Smith. “A lot of my kids helped out to make this production happen, and other teachers… I feel like it was remarkable to put on a show that big… It made me feel at home.”
Playing the leading roles were Aimee Lewey (Dorothy), Hayden Hinds (Scarecrow), Deana Harris (Tinman), Ramero Vargas (Lion), Ariana Sullivan (Wicked Witch) and Alina Afalla (Glinda).
Smith said many of his students have the talent to succeed in theater, film or television if they decide to pursue a career in this realm. Apparently, Hinds served as a costume designer in addition to acting in a leading role, revealing his abilities on the production side as well as the performing side.
“Overall, I think they all have the capability to get into any creative field they want,” Smith said, “whether that’s in a motion picture, or on stage or as a music teacher… I’m just proud of all these kids. A lot of them played their very first role.”
Smith believes The Wizard of Oz has stood the test of time because it reminds people to embrace life’s journey. Even through hardships and setbacks, it’s important to have courage, make friends and learn more about yourself along the way.
Smith, whose background is mostly in film and television, credited the following collaborators for aiding with the production of the musical: Sena Robbins (dance choreographer), Madison Padgett (musical director), Steve Carlton (pianist) and Adam Collins (costume design).
